Missing kayaker's body found

It has been an extensive 16-day search on the ground and in the water for 15-year-old Justin Lewis, who went missing over the Memorial Day holiday at Deerfield Lake.  The last time anyone saw the teen was while he was kayaking but he never returned from that trip.

Over the past several days the search has been concentrated on the lake.  Cadaver dogs from Colorado hit on a location Wednesday that led divers to the boy's body.  The Pennington County Sheriff's Office says Lewis' body was found 30-to-50 feet below the surface after those cadaver dogs indicated there was a body in the area.  Sonar equipment was then used to verify there was an object in the water.  Divers then went down and recovered the body.  The sheriff's office says from information they received the search needed to focus on the water.

Sheriff Kevin Thom says, "You never know until you retrieve the body for sure, but it's a process of elimination. Initially we searched the shore area immediately adjacent to the lake with search dogs, with people on foot combed that whole area. We did find his kayak, his life jacket, shoes in the lake. We did have a witness that saw him on the lake at one point, and his mom had dropped him off at the lake, so all indications pointed to the lake."

The sheriff's office says an autopsy will be scheduled.  Of course, we'll continue to follow this story and bring you the results of that autopsy as soon as they're released.
