Religious groups protest federal mandate
Friday, 08 June 2012 12:23
There were more than 160 cities around the country signed up for Friday's Stand Up For Religious Freedom rally. That total includes a Stand Up Rally here at the corner of Ninth and St. Joseph streets in Rapid City.

The group says they feel their religious freedom is being compromised by a federal government plan to require employer health plans to cover things like contraceptives that they say violates their religious beliefs.

Rally organizer Al Carlson says, "We feel there's a potential for loss of souls because the government's telling people that they can't obey their own conscience. And the government's never done this before in the history of our land, taking away their religious freedoms. We've always had that in our country. And so with this law, they're mandating that we not be able to exercise this right."

Those guidelines from the Obama administration go into effect in August.
