Engineer students look toward the future

The energy industry is changing, which is why experts are looking toward today's youth. That's one of the reasons past president of IEEE Power and Electronics Society, Wanda Reder, met with students at the School of Mines Thursday afternoon. Reder says the global population is growing, which means there'll be a greater need for power, and a greater need for engineers.

Reder says, "The demographic that we have in the power industry is aging. And as a result, about 50 percent of those currently in position are forecasted to leave in the next five years."

Reder says South Dakota offers an abundance of talented students in engineering.

She says IEEE introduced a scholarship program this year. Out of 93 scholarships nationwide, seven went to students right here in South Dakota.
