Teach For America bill heads to SD Senate panel
Thursday, 09 February 2012 09:22
PIERRE, S.D. (AP) _ South Dakota senators caught between expanding the Teach for America program and burdening the state with more costs are recommending the Senate Appropriations Committee pass a bill funding the program for four years. Sioux Falls Republican Sen. Phyllis Heineman is the bill's main sponsor. She says Teach for America brings talented instructors to help the state's struggling students. Teach for America staff say their students on American Indian reservations improve significantly on test scores each year. Opponents say the bill's $1.5 million price tag would burden a cash-strapped education department. The bill calls for a grant program funded by private and public funds. Members of the Senate Education Committee on Thursday voted 7-0 to send the bill to Appropriations. (Copyright 2012 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.)
