Rapid City Regional Hospital announces new trauma center verification
Wednesday, 08 February 2012 11:55

They say it's a big step forward in emergency medical care in the region.   Rapid City Regional Hospital has announced it received a level two trauma center verification. The seal of approval comes from the American College of Surgeons. State law had mandated that all hospitals in South Dakota have some form of trauma verification to better serve patients. Hospitals had to comply by the beginning of the year. Regional says it has been working on getting its certification for quite some time.

Tim Sughrue says, "We had to petition them to be certified. They came in about a year ago, assessed our performance, made a number of recommendations. Again, we've been working diligently for about the last year to fulfill those requirements. They in return came in shortly after Thanksgiving of last year and re-assessed us and we just received notification that we received this level II designation."

As a level two trauma center, Regional must provide comprehensive trauma care with a team that includes a trauma surgeon, neurosurgeon and orthopedic surgeon available at all times. Regional will be up for re-evaluation in three years.
