PIERRE, S.D. (AP) _ The South Dakota House has passed a measure
that would allow people to use guns and archery equipment to shoot
muskrats.
Muskrats are now taken by trappers. But supporters of the bill
say people also should be allowed to shoot muskrats because the
animals are destroying rural roads in northeast South Dakota by
burrowing underneath the roadways.
The bill would require the South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks
Commission to pass rules to specify hunting seasons, areas open to
hunting and other rules for the shooting of muskrats.
The measure says muskrats could be hunted with rimfire rifles of
.22-caliber and smaller, muzzleloaders of .45-caliber or smaller,
shotguns and archery equipment.
The House voted 63-7 to send the measure to the Senate for
further debate.
