Mines hosts seminar on "cultural competency"
Tuesday, 07 February 2012 12:15
Members of the community were given a chance Tuesday to bridge the gap with a culture unlike their own.T  he office of Multicultural Affairs at the School of Mines hosted a cultural competency seminar. The seminar was geared towards learning the historical, legal, and spiritual aspects of the Oceti Sakowin, which includes the Dakota, Lakota, and Nakota people.

Once the School of Mines offered this seminar to the public, they received nothing but positive feedback.

Scott Wiley with the campus Multicultural Affairs office says, "Other trainings were not being offered and so this one came up and Dr. Craig Howe is very well respected and does a fantastic job with it and so there was a great response to it as soon as we opened the doors for the community. The registrations just flooded in."

Wiley says that everyone needs to work across some kind of cultural barrier because in the future it will be beneficial to work competently with other cultures.
