Bill on postsecondary school certification passes
Tuesday, 07 February 2012 13:15
PIERRE, S.D. (AP) _ An amended bill on certifying public and private post-secondary schools in South Dakota will move forward in the Senate. The Senate Education committee passed the bill 7-0. The bill goes next to the full Senate for a vote. The bill creates a method for the Secretary of State to certify which schools are authorized to operate in South Dakota. The legislation is in response to a federal mandate passed last year requiring states to certify all public and private post-secondary schools receiving federal student loans. South Dakota received a one-year extension to get the process set up because the federal mandate passed after the 2012 legislative session ended. Gov. Dennis Daugaard's office requested the legislation. (Copyright 2012 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.)
