Unpaid child support on the rise in South Dakota
Monday, 06 February 2012 07:42
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) _ The amount of unpaid child support owed by parents with children in South Dakota has jumped almost $20 million the past two years, to more than $138 million. The Argus Leader newspaper reports that officials don't agree on the reason for the increase that follows a national trend. State Division of Child Support Secretary Kim Malsam-Rysdon says the jump in unpaid child support is tied to an increase in the number of child support cases. National Child Support Enforcement Association Executive Director Colleen Eubanks blames the economic recession. The majority of the South Dakota cases involve amounts less than $5,000. The largest outstanding balance was just under $216,000. L (Copyright 2012 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.)
