The supporters say prosecutors and federal agents manufactured evidence against him including the murder weapon. The supporters today cited Amnesty International statements made on several occasions calling for Peltier's release. Edgar Bear Runner says, "Leonard's two co-defendants were acquitted on the grounds of self-defense. Had Leonard Peltier been in court with his fellow co-defendants, he too would have been acquitted on the grounds of self-defense." Peltier was sentenced to two life prison terms in 1977 for a shooting incident in which two FBI agents were killed on the Pine Ridge Reservation. -Al Van Zee |
