Missouri River flooding upsets local reservoirs
Wednesday, 01 February 2012 15:43
The 2011 Missouri River flood not only impacted surrounding homes and businesses it also impacted fishing in South Dakota's reservoirs.  So Game, Fish and Parks Department staff hosted the first of a series of meetings tonight to discuss some of those impacts with the public.

The fisheries program administrator in Pierre says it's important to the state and sportsmen to hear how the fisheries faired after the flood.  He says anglers have many questions about last year's Missouri River flooding and it is good for them to know that not all the impacts were negative.  Administrator Geno Adams says, "We lost a lot of salmon from Lake Oahe but those salmon went downstream and they were provided to anglers that normally don't get a chance to catch salmon. So we did lose some smelt in Lake Oahe, but there's still a lot of smelt left, so it's a good thing for the walleye population in Lake Oahe."  The next meeting will take place in Fort Pierre, then Sioux Falls and Aberdeen.
