One of these riders says he's waiting for his turn to ride one of the bulls up for auction later in the show. He says riding is in his blood. Rancher Will Kold says, "I've lived on a ranch all my life for 17 years and I love riding horses and getting into rodeos and riding bucking bulls and it's just really fun." The sale gives these riders the chance to hone their skills and in turn a great chance to show off the athletic qualities of the horses and bulls up for sale. Kold says, "One of the guys that's selling a bull down here called and asked me if I'd come down here and get on his bull. So I told him yeah, I'd get on his bull, ride it out and try to get a good sale price for him." The rider-seller relationship is one that pays off. One of Thursday's potential buyers says if a horse has the right qualities it can rope in a pretty penny. Chancy Wilson says, "They range anywhere from $200 to $100,000 for the top notch athletes." He says all of Thursday's buyers are looking for certain qualities in the horses they want to buy. Wilson says, "You look for the degree of the athleticism of the horse, the degree of how hard the horse bucks, kicks and jumps. Things like that." Wilson helps run a rodeo company and he says purchasing the right horse can make or break a rodeo. Wilson says, "You always want to improve your herd and make your herd better to draw the cowboys. The better the horse you own, the more cowboys will show up at your rodeo." Coordinators say Thursday's sale resulted in about 100 horses along with 40 bulls changing hands between buyers and sellers. Brendyn Medina |
