Site of former packing plant much different today
Monday, 30 January 2012 13:33
Monday marked the 10th anniversary of a fire that cost more than 400 people their jobs, led to the filing of a criminal complaint by the City of Rapid City, and created what we now know as Founders Park.

Back in 2002, an early morning fire ripped through the Federal Beef processing plant.  Declared a total loss, the charred facility sat dormant for years, prompting the city to file a criminal complaint against the building's owners for not cleaning up the mess.

In late 2004, the property was purchased by "Founders Park LLC" which completely overhauled the site into the office complex we see today.

Rapid City Mayor Sam Kooiker says, "We have attorneys and artists and dentists and it's a fantastic business park. There's great accessibility from M Hill and the incredible biking trails and it's just a night and day difference from what it was 10 years ago."

The cause of the fire at the plant was never determined.
