PIERRE, S.D. (AP) _ A South Dakota House panel has endorsed a
proposal to extend the length of term limits for members of the
state Legislature.
The State Affairs Committee voted 9-4 Monday to approve a
proposed constitutional amendment that would change the current
eight-year term limit to 12 years.
If the Legislature approves the measure, voters in November
would be asked to approve the constitutional change.
Lawmakers now can serve no more than eight consecutive years in
a single chamber but can run for the other chamber after that. For
example, someone can run for the Senate after serving eight years
in the House.
Rep. Jim Bolin of Canton says the current term limit is too
short because lawmakers have to leave just when they are starting
to gain experience and knowledge.
