PIERRE, S.D. (AP) _ A South Dakota House committee is
considering a proposal that would expedite the process of checking
to see if a protective order is on file through the use of a ``hope
card.''
A hope card would measure about the size of a credit card and
would include the respondent's identity and details like the
order's issue and expiration dates, case number, issuing court and
county.
The card would cost a few dollars, and each person covered by
the order could receive one.
The cards can't replace valid protection orders, but the bill's
proponents hope it will save time for officers trying to verify
whether an order is on file.
At least 4,500 South Dakotans file for a protective order every
year.
The House Judiciary committee will consider the bill Monday.
