Mines students head to high school to promote engineering fields

Education reform has been a hot topic nationwide with many concerned about students' interests and achievements in math and science.  That's why students and professors from the South Dakota School of Mines took Thursday afternoon to meet with students at Rapid City Central High School.

Volunteers say the goal is to get students interested in engineering at a young age and show them what schools, like the School of Mines, have to offer.  Electrical engineering student Rachel Joseph says, "I went to an all girls high school in Minnesota and I didn't even know about pursuing engineering as a degree until I was a junior. And then after that I was so excited and went to visit colleges, and they told me some awesome things about engineering."  School of Mines officials say they hope holding events like this will eventually help increase enrollment and allow the school to expand student and faculty research programs.
