| SPEARFISH, S.D. (AP) _ The city of Spearfish is putting $30,000 into renovating a building that houses the local Humane Society chapter. The Black Hills Pioneer reports that the Western Hills Humane Society building is in need of new insulation and several other upgrades to bring it up to code. Director Sharleen Bergum says she's grateful for the financial assistance because the improvements will benefit the animals and reduce utility expenses that have been nearing $1,000 a month. Bergum says the building was so poorly insulated that when temperatures dropped below freezing, pipes would freeze, crack and leak water onto the floor below. Renovation work started in mid-October. Later this month, crews will install a steel ceiling, which will help with the overall structure of the building. (Copyright 2011 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.) |
