Authorities say that night Engen went on a rampage, wielding a gun and threatening to kill law enforcement officers. At one point, police say Engen rammed his truck into the Custer County Sheriff's Office. The rampage ended when officials say Engen was fatally shot by Highway Patrol Trooper Todd Albertson, after Engen refused numerous commands to put his weapon down. Attorney General Marty Jackley says, "There was repeated contacts and again wherein he indicated both the desire to have law enforcement kill him as well as to kill law enforcement, so it was a very dangerous situation, very unfortunate situation that ultimately lead to that justified shooting by the state trooper." Authorities say Engen was honorably discharged from the military in May and had been diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Jackely said Friday that it's an unfortunate situation, but says Trooper Albertson was "justified in firing his weapon and using lethal force."
