Local children advocates honored
Friday, 13 May 2011 15:43
It was a chance to honor people who work hard as advocates for children here in the Black Hills. The South Dakota Voices for Children organization held their annual Black Hills Champion for Children Awards Luncheon Friday afternoon.

This year they honored Doctor Rachel Edelen, Pam Teaney Thomas and the BackPack Program. But organizers say there is still a lot of work to do.

Megan Larson says, "We have a lot of efforts here in our Hills area that relate to early care and education, especially for children who are living in circumstances of poverty. So ways people can step up to help us build awareness about that as an economic development activity, as well as directly within programs is beneficial to all of us within the community."

Maureen Murray of Rapid City was this year's Honor Roll Recipient with the George S. Mickelson Policy Leader Award going to Doctor Allen Nord and Jennifer Stalley.
