South Dakota's population has surpassed 800,000, according to data from the U.S. Census released Tuesday.
The final count of 814,180 is a 7.9 percent increase from the
2000 Census.
South Dakota will continue to have just one member in the U.S.
House, but the population count will help determine state
legislative districts when they're redrawn late next year.
The United States' population was announced as 308,745,538, an
almost 10 percent increase from the last Census counts. South
Dakota was listed as one of the five least populated states and one
of five states with the lowest population density.
